Silver salmon or Coho (Oncorhynchus
kisutch) is absolutely bright silver fish with gray gums, distinguished by black spots on the back and upper tail. The weight can vary due to the migrations. Silvers are voracious feeders and can be caught 10 - 15 pounds, though occasionally are caught with weights up to 20 pounds. Silvers are frequently spotted jumping above water.
As the King season comes to close in late July here in Alaska, the first run of silver salmon begin migrating into the lower section of the Kenai River and appear in catchable numbers by the first week of August. We target these aggressive biters in the lower section of the Kenai River, near the tidal zone from early August into early September. The combative nature of the silver salmon allows anglers to choose from a variety of fishing techniques and styles to catch them as they migrate thorough different sections of the river. The middle to end of September we start fishing the upper Kenai, below Skilak Lake.
